Did you just realize your garden is looking a little too sparse or too green? Or maybe you have a party coming up in June and you want to give your landscape a refresh. An easy way to quickly liven it up is with some flowering plants. Just because it’s late May, it doesn’t mean planting season is done. There are tons of annuals and perennials you can plant in your garden and it’s it’s not hard either!
Your local grocery, nursery or even hardware store will likely have tons of flowers to choose from. Zinnias, petunias, cosmos, and sunflowers are all great options. Marigolds can work too sometimes rabbits and deer find them very tasty. Geraniums don't seem to be as enticing so they might make a better choice! Most of these plants will need to be watered right after you plant them and you may also want to add some rich soil or bone meal (if the pH of your soil is lower than 7) when planting to ensure they grow healthily.
If you’re the type to set it and forget it, you may prefer perennials in your garden. You can choose from loads of lillies, salvia, coneflowers, and more. We have peonies and lilies that come in every year without fail (for over seven years now!). And, if you are worried that it’s too late to plant them now, you may be okay planting your dahlia and gladiolus bulbs even now and still get to enjoy them in the late summer/early fall. Dahlias are so easy to plant as the hole that you have to dig is very shallow (only a couple of inches) and they don’t require a lot of water. Gladiolus will have you using your muscles to dig much deeper (9 inches or so) but the effort will be worth the beautiful blooms you will be able to enjoy later in the summer and early fall.
Good luck with planting your favorite blooms. It will definitely give your landscape a colorful, refreshed look and feel!
